The MARQTM (Moody’s Analytics Risk Quality) portal product is designed to assist financial institutions that provide loans to small businesses. This product provides a web-based, customer-facing portal that prospective borrowers can use to upload financial information for review by the financial institution. This financial data will automatically be analyzed to produce a business credit score called the MARQ score.
MARQ Score
The MARQ score is a numeric indicator provided by Moody’s Analytics based on a model that statistically analyzes the financial data of private companies to estimate the probability of default on credit. A peer score is provided to show the typical score for businesses in a similar industry and region to give lenders a point of comparison.
The score is based on a statistical analysis of the business’s financial information, including measures that indicate if the business is generating enough cash to make its debt payments and if the business is building net worth over time. The MARQ score also considers the borrower’s industry and external economic factors.
The MARQ score can help lenders determine a borrower’s creditworthiness. It can also provide borrowers with more understanding of how lenders will evaluate their financial position and, if necessary, help them to create a plan for improvement.
Using data submitted by the borrower to the MARQ portal, the score is calculated based on financial statement ratios derived from inputs from current and prior year financial statements. The ratios are used to evaluate the potential creditworthiness of the borrower’s business based on historical debt repayment performance by private businesses with similar characteristics. The historical information comes from the Credit Research Database of Moody’s Analytics, which has been collected in partnership with more than 75 global financial institutions and represents financial information on more than 17 million private companies around the world. The score also takes into account information about economic conditions and how that might impact repayment capacity.
The median MARQ score across businesses in the Moody’s Analytics Credit Research Database is 76. A MARQ score above 83 puts a borrower in the top quartile of businesses, which means the borrower is in the top 25% in terms of its likelihood of paying back its credit when compared to other private companies. MARQ scores below the median may indicate a higher level of credit risk.
MARQ scores vary by industry because some types of business are inherently riskier than others.
Integrating with the MARQ Portal Product
Integration with the MARQ portal product is available as an add-on module to Lending Cloud. This module enables integration through the use of an API repository. When your customers or prospects upload income/expense statements and balance sheets to the MARQ portal, they can then use MARQ portal functionality to send the financial data to you. When this is done, the financial data will automatically be added to Lending Cloud's MARQ repository. You will then be able to import the financial statements from the MARQ repository into Lending Cloud.
In addition, system administrators can enable you to use the following MARQ information that is generated for those customers for credit decisioning and as additional information on their general information screens:
MARQ Score—The Moody’s Analytics Risk Quality business credit score.
Effective Date—This is the date the MARQ score was generated.
Peer Score—This score represents the average MARQ score for the industry sector and U.S. region in which the prospective borrower’s business operates.
Note This functionality is only available for commercial customers, at this time.
